Braving the Jellies

Hi, blog!  I was lucky enough to go out with Aya, Jess, and Margo on our private yacht.
...Ok, it's a little paddleboat, but it came in handy!  The water was full of little jellies today (I have the stings to prove it), so it was welcome shelter when we were going through pictures.  The team was looking for parrotfishes, octopuses, and segmented worms, so we were able to stay pretty close to the shore line.

After a morning snorkel full of parrotfishes, we went out again in the afternoon to find other animals.  Segmented worms are, weirdly, really hard to find, but we found two octopuses!  One was very surprised to see us.

This was before the octopus knew we saw it.  It might be hard to see, but it's in the center of the image!  You can see the bumpy ridges of its body.

And this was after it noticed that we saw it.  As you can see, the color change is dramatic!  After we continued watching, it began to radiate thin blue lines from its body.  Judging from its chunky limbs and large webbing on its arms, I think that it is an O. briareus, but I'm not certain!

We found a smaller octopus -- possibly a juvenile of the same species!  Only its eyes stuck above its home.

If you look under the cave area, you can see its eyes peeking out!

So swimming through the jellies was worthwhile!
