The Climb

Today was our first day meeting the locals. To get to them we had to hike over a mountain that both winded and terrified me. I only slipped about twelve times though so I am pretty proud of myself. When we finally made it down the mountain and into the village I was awestruck at its beauty. The houses each had their own unique look and the rest of the village was littered with lush palms. We went over with the intent to socialize with the local children in school, but they were on break so we walked to the bar patio and looked into the sea until a very nice man came to play soccer with Noah. He laughed at our inability to play correctly and then two little boys joined and also laughed. Granted our lack of skill was amusing. Eventually more children joined and participated in varying activities with us including tossing around a shell. We stayed for quite some time. Partially because we were having a lot of fun and partially because we dreaded the hike back to the resort.
Hiking back felt like death so immediately after, I walked into the sea to feel the cool water. Then Lauren and I took the asthma-inducing walk back to our room to change into bathing suits. It was too hot to just lounge around on land. We stayed in the water until lunch and after lunch we hopped right back in to hunt down and some snails.

I was exhausted at this point so I took a shower and then almost fell asleep reading articles until dinner. Some people actually did fall asleep and almost missed fish tacos. That would have been a tragedy.

All in all, today was a great day and I’m excited to go back and meet more locals. If only I spoke Spanish.
