A long and humid hour hike, ten lizards, countless hermit
crabs, and three tarantulas later, we finally made it to our destination; the
lighthouse tower. The first thing that greets us is an eerie abandoned cabin,
which made the soaring lighthouse look more like a Tower of Terror. We open a
heavy and rusty metal door to find the only way up the ominous five hundred
tower: a metal ladder. As if staring up to see the small light at the end of
the tunnel wasn’t scary enough, Kasia informs us that you can feel the tower
sway when it’s windy. Dani and I said a little prayer and started to make our
way up the ladder, one cautious step at a time. Half way up the ladder I find
that my arms were already tired and had forced myself NOT to look down. Once I
reached the top of the ladder the hardest part was trying to climb out of the
small hole. It proved to be much harder given that the entire tower was
swaying. Emerging out of the hole I find that old rope, zip ties, and rust were
what was holding this tower together. Though the climb up was quite arduous,
the view was well worth it; a perfect 360 degree view of the entire island. The
feeling of pure awe overtook the fear. After many pictures and selfies later we
decided to climb down the ladder. The worst part was mustering up the courage
to go through the hole to climb down. The climb itself wasn’t that bad. Once my
foot touched the ground a wave of relief swept over me, then I quickly
remembered that another hour hike awaits us to get back to the resort.
